Oven-Toasted Italian Sub: A Gourmet Lunch Delight
Ingredients
For the Italian Sub Sandwich:
- 1 large Italian sub roll (approximately 12 inches)
- 4 slices of deli ham
- 4 slices of salami
- 4 slices of mortadella
- 4 slices of provolone cheese
- 1/4 cup of roasted red peppers, sliced
- 1/4 cup of banana peppers, sliced
- 1 medium tomato, sliced
- 1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup of shredded lettuce
- 2 tablespoons black olives, sliced
- 2 tablespoons Italian dressing
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Sides:
- 4 whole dill pickles
- 4 servings of kettle-cooked chips
Instructions
1. Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
2. Assemble the Sub:
- Slice the Italian sub roll horizontally, leaving one side hinged to act as a "V" for stuffing.
- Drizzle the inside of the roll with olive oil and a tablespoon of Italian dressing.
3. Layer the Meats:
- Lay down the slices of provolone cheese first to create a barrier for the meats.
- Evenly layer the ham, salami, and mortadella across the length of the roll.
4. Add the Veggies:
- Layer the roasted red peppers, banana peppers, tomato slices, red onion, shredded lettuce, and olives on top of the meats.
5. Season:
- Drizzle the remaining Italian dressing over the vegetables and season with salt and pepper.
6. Toast the Sub:
- Carefully transfer the assembled sub onto a baking sheet.
- Open the sub slightly to allow for even toasting.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes until the bread begins to crisp and the cheese starts to melt.
7. Serve:
- Once toasted, remove from the oven and let it cool for a minute.
- Close the sub, press gently, and cut the sub into four equal parts.
- Serve immediately with a side of dill pickles and a serving of kettle-cooked chips for each person.
